It doesn't say a whole lot about my own efforts if my third blog entry is actually sending readers to someone else's blog, but that is how much respect I have for Seth Godin. I consider him to be the smartest marketer of us all as well as the most inspirational one. Why? Seth Godin has the uncanny ability to look at situations with so much common sense that he's bound to uncover an interesting insight along the way. After reading his blog or books, I usually walk away saying: "Oh yeah, duh, why didn't I think of that."
Why is Seth Godin so darn smart. I think I know why. He loves marketing. He writes about it, he talks about it and he does a fair bit himself. Nobody has sold more marketing books (printed or digital) and his blog is the most popular marketing blog out there. If you've never read one of his books, do it. They're all good, quick and easy reads that leave you thinking for quite some time thereafter. My favorite is probably Purple Cow, which is all about being remarkable in business.
A lot of the blogs and books as part of our future reading are of tactical nature. Seth Godin's writing is very strategic and will spur some major re-thinking on how you develop products, market them and treat your customers. He is that good.
When I grow up, I want to be just like Seth Godin. But maybe with just a little bit more hair. Until then, I am going to keep reading his blog and books. And so should you.
