Freedom and WriteRoom - Two Tools To Keep You Focused

I always talk about the importance of allocating a healthy chunk of time to a certain task/project/campaign and to then sit down and knock it out. It's a much more efficient process than multitasking a project over a long period of time for a number of reasons; most notably lost focus and momentum. As I say, Time Kills Good Work.

Whoever knows me knows that my attention span barely compares with that of an adolescent hummingbird. But I have a lot of work to get done. When working on a computer, what do I get distracted by. Everything. Stuff on my screen. Stuff on the Internet. Everything on the Internet really. There really is not better time to start building a Republic custom single speed bike than when on deadline to launch a client's website.

So here are two of my favorite tools that help me stay focused on my scrappy mission. They're both mac tools but I am sure you can find something comparable for your PC.

Freedom - From The Internet

freedom-applicationFreedom is an application that disables all networking on a computer for up to eight hours. It basically locks me out from checking my email or going on the Internet. It's like being on deadline while jamming on my old Amiga 500. You can set the time that you want to be offline and Freedom won't go away other than if you reboot your computer.

WriteRoom - Distraction Free Writing

write-roomBelieve it or not, I can get distracted by browsing the Microsoft Word Help Desk. So whenever I need to focus on writing a proposal, long email or love letter; I use an application called WriteRoom. WriteRoom basically turns my background black while tuning out all other applications which very much has the feel of working in MS Dos. It drives me crazy. But it works.
